Trolley Platform Agent

Platform agents welcome visitors aboard the Issaquah Valley Trolley.

Location: Issaquah Depot

Responsibilities: Punch tickets, assist passengers boarding and exiting the trolley, quant them, and answer questions.

Frequency: At least once a month.

Schedule: Saturday and Sunday from May to September, 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Training: 5 hours training by shadowing another agent on the job.

Age of Volunteer:  16 and up. Doesn’t require a guardian.

Commitment Level – Medium: At least 5 shifts during trolley season from May to September.

Special Events Volunteer

Assist with events like our Hands-On History Days, Heritage Day, and other events.

Location:  Issaquah Depot.

Responsibilities: Preparing materials and helping children ages 2 – 8 with historical hands-on activities such as making butter, doing laundry, coloring masks, making greeting cards or holiday ornaments, etc.

Frequency: Saturdays and/or Sundays: February 10th, May 11th, October 26th and 27th,  November 30th, December 1st, and Independence Day on July 4th from 10:00 a.m. to  4:00 p.m. with half time shifts, 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. and 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.,  available.

Training: On the job.

Age of Volunteer: 14 and up. Doesn’t need a guardian.

Commitment  Level – Low: Minimum one shift a year.

Office Assistant Volunteer

Office Assistant Volunteers help with the daily running of our organization. Tasks might include filing, collating binders, entering data into spreadsheets, or other administrative tasks.

Location: Gilman Town Hall

Responsibilities:  Office Assistant Volunteers help with the daily running of our organization.

Frequency: Minimum 2 hours a week.

Schedule:  Monday through Friday 11:00am-3:00pm

Training:  On the job.

Age of Volunteer:  18 and up.

Commitment Level – Medium: Some tasks may have very short deadlines while other duties may provide more flexibility.

Hike Assistant Volunteer

Hike assistants works with the hike leader to provide support during the hike of a group of participants on coal mining and logging hikes around Issaquah. Responsibilities include taking pictures, distributing evaluations, making sure that hike participants are staying with the group.

Location: Hiking trails in Issaquah

Frequency: Depends on hike schedule. Usually one time a month.

Schedule: Some Saturdays in Fall, Spring, and Summer. 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Training: On the job.

Age of Volunteer: 14 and up. Doesn’t require guardian.

Commitment Level – Low: One-time hike or more.

Facilities Volunteer

Facilities Volunteers help maintain the museum grounds and facilities in a safe and attractive manner.

Responsibilities:  Tasks might include removing weeds, cutting overgrowth, picking up litter, assisting with painting projects, doing basic repairs, pressure-washing, etc.

Frequency:  No specific schedule. As needed and depending on availability of volunteer.

Schedule:  Anytime between Tuesday and Saturday in Spring, Summer, and Fall between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Training: On the job.

Age of Volunteer: 14 and up. Age 14-18, Guardian required unless being directly supervised by IHM staff.

Commitment Level – Low: One time assignment or continuing.

Collections Volunteer

Collections Volunteers work with the Collections Manager to research, catalog, and care for IHM’s ever growing holdings of artifacts and photographs.  Some Collections Volunteers work on specific long-term projects; other help with whatever is most needed during the time when they are in the building.

Location: Gilman Town Hall

Responsibilities: Scanning and/or cataloging photographs, cataloging artifacts.

Frequency: At least one hour a week.

Schedule: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Training: On the job.

Required Age of Volunteer: 16 and up. Doesn’t require a guardian.

Commitment Level – Medium: At least four hours a month for two months.

Tour Guide

Issaquah History Museums’ tour program provides additional interpretation of  exhibits at the Gilman Town Hall and Issaquah Depot. Tour Guides use hands-on objects and activities to engage their audience, creating an age-appropriate educational experience. As a Tour Guide, you’ll learn inquiry-based techniques to use with kids, along with deeper information about the exhibit contents in order to create a positive learning experience for visiting groups. 

WHEN: As needed, during school hours and on Saturdays. Most school tours are scheduled during the months of May and June.

WHERE: At both the Gilman Town Hall Museum and the Issaquah Depot Museum.

TRAINING: Ten hours of training, which includes both direct instruction and shadowing tours.

AGE REQUIREMENT: 16 and up

TIME COMMITMENT: 10 months (one school year); depending on the demand for tours, you’ll probably give one tour a month.

IHM Docent welcoming visitors at the Issaquah Depot Museum

Docent

Responsibilities:  Docents at the Issaquah Depot Museum and the Gilman Town Hall Museums act as hosts and representatives of the museums, and provide a personal connection to the museum experience. Docents welcome visitors, answer basic questions, sell trolley tickets and gift shop items, and open and secure the building.

Schedule:

Issaquah Depot Museum

Saturdays & Sundays, 11 AM – 3 PM (October-April)

Saturdays & Sundays, 10:55 AM – 3:05 PM (May-September)

Gilman Town Hall Museum

Saturdays, 11 AM – 3 PM

Training:  1-2 hours of on-the-job training, followed by working one or more shifts with another volunteer.

Minimum Age:

14 and up

14-17 with a guardian

18 and up, no restrictions
