Introduction

This unit and kit is a 2002 revision, compilation and expansion of previous Issaquah history units: Joe Peterson’s 1979 unit, updated in 1987, updated again in 1995, and revised in 1998.  All activities are aligned with current Essential Academic Learning Requirements and Issaquah School District curriculum.  This 2002 revision was made possible by a grant from the 2001-2002 Landmarks and Heritage Cultural Education Program, coordinated by Erica Maniez, Issaquah Historical Society Museum Director, and written by Michelle Lindstrom, elementary teacher.

The unit and kit are available for check out to any teacher in the Issaquah School District. The unit provides background information, projects, worksheets, and activities to assure the teacher success in presenting the unit.  This unit is designed for elementary school students.

Additionally, there is a SLIDE SHOW box that can be checked out separately.  All of the lessons in the unit can be taught without the slide show, but the slides enrich several lessons greatly.  The quality and variety of the pictures in the slide show are excellent.  While it is optional, it is highly recommended that teachers check out the slide show when teaching this unit. There is a video in the kit that shows many of the slides with narration.  However, the video is far too long for young children to watch.  The video portion that shows the slide pictures is best used as a teacher resource.

 To the Instructor

The activities are organized in a logical and sequential order.  However, the activities are designed so that a teacher can pick and choose which activities to use.  No one activity is dependent upon another.  Student success with the culminating activities requires a certain degree of exposure to Issaquah history.

If the activities are followed sequentially, this unit is designed to move from defining what a community is and what makes Issaquah a unique community, to how it began, grew and changed over the years.  The culminating activities at the end of the unit, allow students an opportunity to reflect and apply what they have learned.

We hope you enjoy using this kit and find the unit and activities helpful in teaching Issaquah history!
