Issaquah Historical Society Walking Tour of Mining
History
On Saturday July 10, Issaquah Historical Society
volunteer Stephen Grate will lead an interpretive hike of Issaquah’s mining
history. The hike will begin at the Issaquah Depot at 10 AM and will last
about two hours and cover approximately two miles over easy terrain.
Grate has done extensive research on the history and locations of mining
sites in the area. The walking tour will focus on the operations of the
Issaquah & Superior Mining Company, from the 1860s until the 1920s, and will
visit the remains of mine entrances from this era. Participants will also
visit the site of the Issaquah & Superior’s company homes on Mine Hill Road,
the site of the coal bunkers and washing plant, the route of the old rail
spur, and many other remaining features of the mining era. This narrated
tour of Issaquah’s mining past will paint a picture of our community’s early
history.

will be limited to 25 people. Please call (425) 392-3500 or e-mail

Issaquah
Historical Society Day at the Depot!
Community members to assist
with depot maintenance
The Issaquah Historical Society is inviting
community members to volunteer their time on Saturday, August 28, 2004 to
prepare the Depot for a fresh coat of paint. Volunteers will meet at the
Depot at 10 AM to begin scraping old paint and doing other prep work (no
actual painting will take place on this date). Volunteers will also take
care of some other regular maintenance work, such as painting the railroad
signals and re-shingling the vintage Northern Pacific speeder shack.
The work party will end at or before 4 PM so that volunteers can enjoy pizza
and beverages. The work party will be a great opportunity to meet people in
the community and contribute to the preservation of this Issaquah landmark.
It will also be a good time for students, scouts, or others to fulfill
community service requirements.
The Issaquah Depot was originally constructed in 1888. In the 1980s, the
City of Issaquah purchased the building, and the Issaquah Historical Society
took on the task of restoring the building to its original grandeur. Ten
years and thousands of volunteer hours later, the Issaquah Depot was listed
on the National Register of Historic Places. Today it is recognized as one
of Issaquah’s civic treasures.
Please contact the museum at (425) 392-3500, or e-mail
if you would like to participate in the work party.

Issaquah Historical Society Annual Meeting October 12, 2004 at 7 PM in the Issaquah Depot
Board Nominees, By-Laws Modification Put to Vote
If you are a member in good standing of the Issaquah
Historical Society, you will be given the opportunity to vote for new board
members at the October 12th annual meeting. Nominees for the coming year are
Jean Cerar, Bob Ittes and Greg Spranger.
Members will also vote on a
modification of the Issaquah Historical Society's by-laws. At its February
28, 2004 retreat, the board concluded that a modified Mission Statement
would better convey the purpose of the organization. The board recommends a
Mission Statement framed in an active voice. It also recommends removing the
reference to specific geographic areas. Some of these areas are developing
their own heritage societies, making it inappropriate for them to be
included in the IHS by-laws. Although the words have been modified, the
intent of the mission statement remains unchanged.
The following passage:
Mission: To promote the discovery, preservation, and dissemination of
the history of Issaquah and its environs. Environs extend to High Point,
Preston, Maple Valley, Hobart, Newcastle, Monohon, Sammamish Plateau, Pine
Lake, Beaver Lake, and Coalfield.
Will be replaced with:
The Issaquah Historical Society's mission is to discover, preserve and
share the history of Issaquah and surrounding areas.
If you will be unable to attend the meeting on October 12 (7 PM, Issaquah
Depot), please contact the Issaquah Historical Society office at
425/392-3500 or by e-mail at
. We would be happy to send you an absentee
ballot.
Issaquah Historical Society Annual Meeting Election Results

The
membership of the Issaquah Historical Society has elected Jean Cerar, Bob Ittes

Issaquah Historical Society's by-laws. The following passage in regard to
the I.H.S. Mission Statement:
Mission: To promote the discovery, preservation, and dissemination of
the history of Issaquah and its environs. Environs extend to High Point,
Preston, Maple Valley, Hobart, Newcastle, Monohon, Sammamish Plateau, Pine
Lake, Beaver Lake, and Coalfield.
