Informational Programs

The society's bi-monthly meetings are open to the public! Join us as we review a different aspects as local history at each meeting as told by people who remember!  The meetings start at 7pm at the Historic Railroad Depot, and last an hour to an hour and a half.

Ferry Tales

Norman Blye will join us for Ferry Tales: A History of Lake Washington Ferry Service.

Ferries ran on the lake from the 1880s until the Mercer Island Bridge opened in 1940. During the 1920s and 1930s, Norman’s parents worked on the ferries. Norman will share both the funny and tragic stories of ferry operations on the lake.

History of the Issaquah Fish Hatchery

A presentation by Steve Bell, who will be telling us more about the history of the Fish Hatchery, and about it's current and future plans. There will also be some photos and hatchery artifacts there for people to look at.

History of the Gilman Water Company and History of the Fire Plug

Presenter: Eric Erickson, historian for the Pacific Northwest Section of the American Water Works.

The Gilman Water Company founded in 1888 was Issaquah's first water system. Hear about its founders, early water rates, franchises, the Town of Issaquah's acquisition of the system and its water supply.

In addition the history of the fire plug from 1800 to present times will be included in the program. Hear how the steam engine brought about the development of fire hydrants to support fire fighting efforts by fire departments. See a replica of the first fire plug, early fire hydrants and improvements included in modern hydrants.

We're celebrating the 30th birthday of the Issaquah Historical Society with cake, photos, and presentations on some of our projects over the years.

Historic Postcards

Collector Jean Roth will give a presentation on the significance of historic postcards, and will share some items from her collection.

Saturday, March 30, 2002, 11:00a-3:00p at the Depot Museum
Telegraph Demonstration: Frank Remington will demonstrate the use of the telegraph and will share some of his telegraph equipment.

On Sunday, April 7, the Willowbridge Antiques Show & Sale will be held at the Pickering Barn from  9 AM to 5 PM. Organizers of this antique show will donate a portion of their proceeds to the Issaquah   Historical Society. So if you love antiques and want to support the IHS, be sure to check it out!

On Saturday, April 13, Cathy Fulton of Capturing Memories will lead a half-day Memoir-Writing Workshop on Life Timelines at the Issaquah Depot from 9 AM to 1 PM. This workshop will help you see your whole life composed on a time-line. It will also provide you with enough story material to keep you writing for a long time. Registration cost is $15 for IHS members and $20 for nonmembers. Space is limited, so register early. Call 425/392-3500 for more information.

Save the date for Heritage Day on Saturday, August 17. This free community festival will focus on what life was like in Issaquah 100 years ago. Kids and adults alike will be able to split a cedar shingle, operate a pump car, wash clothing with a washboard, and try their hand at making butter. Heritage Day festivities will feature live music, and will take place at both the Issaquah Depot and the Gilman Town Hall Museum.
