Winter History Program
Saturday, January 12th, 2008, 11am
Issaquah Depot
The Winter History Program will feature a
screening of “Land of the Giants.” The presentation will also include a
brief talk by the film’s producer, Chuck Brodish, who will share his
vision for the film’s successors and talk about how the film came to be
made. The presentation will begin at 11AM at the Issaquah Depot.
“Land of the Giants” is the first in a
planned series of three films dealing with the history of the Snoqualmie
and Issaquah Valleys. The giants referred to in the title are the area’s
huge hemlock, cedar, fir and spruce trees, which gave rise to a thriving
lumber and logging industry. This 30 minute film tells the story of the
Snoqualmie Pass, which had its beginnings as a Native American trail and
is now the location of a 7-lane freeway. All IHM
history programs are open to the public, and free of charge.
Refreshments will be served.
Spring History Program Native Seattle and
Beyond:
Thoughts on Place, Past, and Power in Puget Sound Country
Saturday, April 12, 2008, 11am
Historian Coll Thrush will read from his
recently-published book Native Seattle: Histories from the
Crossing-Over Place(to be released in paperback in spring 2008). In
addition to discussing the diverse Native pasts of the Emerald City --
the experiences of local Indigenous people like the Duwamish, the
stories of Native migrants of many tribes, and the uses of "Indian"
images such as totem poles in the urban landscape -- Professor Thrush
will offer thoughts on how to apply the lessons of Seattle to places
like Issaquah. What do we really know about the local landscape prior to
American settlement, and how did local Native peoples survive the
dramatic changes that followed? How do the stories we tell as a society
reflect what it means to "belong" to a place that has changed so
rapidly? Please join us for a wide-ranging conversation that will help
you see where you live in a new light.
